The green gold from Medelpad: A love story for Korsta hops

The green gold from Medelpad: A love story for Korsta hopsThere is something almost magical about growing plants that carry a story. The Korsta hops, a proud Swedish heritage variety from Medelpad, is just such a plant. For those who dream of filling their garden with the scent of tropical fruit and citrus, this robust climber is a fantastic choice. Growing hops is a journey, from the first cautious shoots of spring to the rich harvest of late summer.

Here’s a guide to turning your garden into a hop oasis: Create the perfect scene

It all starts with the right conditions. The Korsta hop is a life-loving plant that thrives best in a sunny and sheltered location.

  • Choose the right mode:Give the plant 6–8 hours of sun per day, but make sure it is protected from the wind – perhaps next to a house wall or a plank – so that the long tendrils remain undamaged.
  • The earth is the foundation:Hops need nutritious and well-drained soil. Mix in some compost or well-rotted cow manure to give the plant a flying start.
  • Vertical elegance:Remember that hops are climbers that can reach heights of up to 8 meters. Set up a stable support, such as a trellis or wire system, already when planting.

Once the plant is in place, the daily adventure begins. In the spring, when the first shoots emerge, it is time to act as a guide. Select the 2-4 strongest vines and guide them clockwise up the climbing support. By cutting off the excess vines at ground level, you concentrate the plant’s energy on what really counts.

Don’t forget to water! Especially from May to mid-June, consistent moisture is the key to successful establishment. A good root soak every now and then is much better than a daily sprinkling. The climax of the harvest festival

As late summer draws to a close and we reach mid-August, it’s time for the reward. When the cones feel papery to the touch and are filled with a sticky, yellow powder (lupulin), you’ll know the time has come. The scent of tropical fruit and citrus will fill the air, telling you it’s time to harvest.

After harvesting, the plant enters its dormant phase. Cut it down to 10–15 cm above the ground and cover the rootstock with leaves to protect it from the cold of winter. It is a cycle of life, harvest and rest that year after year gives you the joy of growing your own “green gold”.
